Winter sighting.

January – February 2016

Beginning of yet another year. As expected very hot with a bit of relief in the afternoons with thunder showers and some rain. It has been an interesting period that we are going through, We saw the return of White Rhinos, Elephants and Buffalo. We found a carcass of a young Zebra presumably killed by lion. The lions have been busy and a herds of zebra screaming alarm calls very often throughout the night. We hope we will see them soon around the area. We sighted two giraffes mating as we watched we realised that the female had a young calf with her which looked very young. The calf tried to suckle but the mom had to also deal with the attention she got from the bull. Herds of eland with big bull continue to bless us with their presence and some of the bulls battle for status amongst the herd living a few casualties behind. Two of the bulls are limping from injuries they suffered during the battles.

Ostrich Egg shells

September is upon us and strong winds sweep past every morning and sometimes even during the day. We have seen a few tree species flowering amongst them the black thorn (acacia melifera) and common wild pear (dombeya ruthindifolia). Giraffe female and her calf seen drinking water at one of our dams and the little calf was very nervous and wanted to run but decided otherwise. Zebra herds continue to travel to dams and the footpath are slowly becoming clearer and clearer. Kudu bulls sighted near the camp slowly browsing and they seemed to be enjoying their browsing. Impala rams showing battle scars after mating season, some with broken horns, wounds and some limping. A large herds of eland sights with about 15 calves and a very big bull accompanied the herd and you could hear click sound elands are known for from the massive bull. Vervet monkey sighting are becoming frequent but as soon as the monkeys sight us they make a dash for cover and hide from the vehicle. Elephant bulls continue to visit us frequently and you can start seeing the signs they leave behind. They are slowly but surely giving the landscape a new look. Brown hyena tracks are a frequent sight around one of our dams we hope to have more sighting of the brown hyena not only their footprints.

The grey headed bush-shrike chicks are growing up fast and is seen daily in and around the lodge. We are waiting patiently for the ostrich & white faced owl’s eggs to hatch. The giraffe calves have been seen eating leaves, they are doing very well. With the rain the buffalo and rhino are enjoying the mud baths, even wit a little competition as to who stays the longest in the mud, thus far the rhino is king of the bath, and the buffalo has to wait patiently for their turn. The ostrich still has a daily battle with the jackal, but wards off any attempts of the jackal to get to the eggs.

GAME DRIVE DIARIES, NOVEMBER 1-14, 2014

Elephant bull KwalataWe had good rains the last few days & with it came a Bachelor group of elephants, buffalo and red hartebeest. The bachelor group consist of 3 big bulls and one teenage bull.

The teenage bull showed us an unusual behaviour where he dug out a African potato and went down on his knees to pick it up with his lips and started eating the potato in front of us as he was crossing the road. They spend the day in the area breaking trees and enjoy mud bath around one our dams. Imperial truck rental enjoyed the sighting of this bachelor group.
The bird life continue to increase and their calls amazing. The fighting between different species continues as we watched a Grey headed bush shrike get mobbed by two black backed puffbacks. The grey headed bush shrike managed to escape to his nest which left the puffbacks frustrated.

Our ostrich are still incubating their nest and it seems they have learned how to manage the annoying black backed jackals. The black backed jackals also have had 4 pups very nice to see the young jackals playing around their den.
